Going through the third time portal conserves your momentum, and you can only place time portals which are intact and valid surfaces in both the present and the future.

The player is an unnamed test subject (only referenced as test subject 4509 ) that was awoken from stasis by an unnamed automated AI, and is excepted to complete an special test course of 25 different test chambers evolving an third portal that controls time, which allows you to go to the future, the future versions of the puzzles show degradation and destruction of the test chamber. The player goes from one puzzle to the next by using a machine which deconstructs their atoms and constructs them again in the next test, this also allows the player to reappear when he/she dies, however, the AI says that i is only possible to reconstruct the body once the present body is destroyed. Later in the game, it is revealed that the player was the only test subject who survived traveling through time, and that the technology used to make the time portals only works in one configuration (from the present to 20 years in the future). On the final moment of the game, endings can diverge: The AI also says that it has no idea why the test chamber is destroyed in the future, and says that the evidence it could collect points that one rogue test subject destroyed the facility (possibly referencing the events of Portal) and that the test chambers were made to train the player in using the time portal, so the player can stop the rogue test subject "dead in her tracks".
